3 Lessons I’ve Learned About Blog Writing + Year in Review
It’s been a great year of blogging and business in general at K Design Co. One of my favorite things to do at the end of each month is tally up my analytics for my blog & website. If you adore blog writing as much as I do, I bet this is one of your favorite things too!
Don’t get me wrong, I’m definitely still a creative at heart, but there’s just something about seeing those numbers climb that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. How about you? Now that we’re here at the end of the year, instead of comparing my stats month to month, I like to look at the whole year and compare it to the previous year.

Here’s a peek at my top 5 blog posts (in visits) from this past year:

All but one of these posts specifically tie into the branding services I offer, so that’s a huge plus! It means I’ve gotten tons of opportunities to get my name out there and that readers are definitely interested in learning more about branding.
While I wasn’t 100% consistent with my blog writing efforts, I did my best to write 1-2 blogs at minimum per month. For a solo freelancer, I think this is pretty admirable, considering blogging is not my primary source of income. Some months I was even able to write 4 blogs, which is ultimately my goal moving forward in 2019. I have no doubt in my mind that I would not have obtained the amount of traffic that I did if not for blogging. This year my website and blog turned 4 years old and I was really hoping to see some growth from all the hard work that I have put in, plus the redesign at the end of last year.
So what was I able to accomplish? Well, a LOT actually! Here are some basic stats from 2018 compared to 2017.
Wowza! I just pulled these numbers for this post and I still cannot believe them! These may not be huge numbers for some of you but for me, it’s kinda a big deal. Not for the numbers alone, but what the numbers actually mean – more email opt-ins, more clients and ultimately more projects.
So all of that success has got me thinking, what can I take with me into 2019…
Takeaway #1 – Be consistent when blog writing.
One of the biggest takeaways I have from this year in regards to blogging is to stay the course! It can feel like such a chore sometimes or just another thing you have on your plate, but if you commit to it, you will see a return. I know I did. Commit to writing a minimum number of posts per week or per month and stick with it as much as you can.
Takeaway #2 – SEO is critical for blogging.
I was blessed to be involved in the beta preview this year of SEO Demystified, a course by Leanne Wong, which allowed me to learn some SEO fundamentals and also gave me some fresh perspective for my blog writing. Yoast is a great tool to help you optimize your blog posts, but I also discovered some other amazing tools like Ubersuggest. Take the time to focus on your SEO for each and every blog post to make it count.
Takeaway #3 – Promote. Promote. Promote.
It’s not enough just to hit publish and walk away – Blog writing is not just about writing! You have to get your content out there and in front of people’s eyeballs. I’ve joined several Facebook groups this year that help me do just that. I also leaned heavily into Pinterest and invested a lot of time and energy into making beautiful Pinterest pins to attract readers to my blog. Would you believe that Pinterest was my #1 referral in 2018?
