Guest Blogging…What’s Up With That?

Have you ever heard of the term guest blogging? If you are a long-time player in the blogging world, then chances are guest blogging isn’t news to you, but for the rest of you, the concept may still seem mysterious.

So you’ve heard of blogging, but guest blogging? It’s not as scary as it sounds. Guest blogging is writing a blog post on someone else’s site. That’s it. Easy peasy, right? But why would anyone want to guest blog in the first place? After all, isn’t blogging about getting more eyeballs on your website? Well, yes and no.

Blogging is beneficial because it creates more pages for your site which also equates to more opportunities for people to find you through search. It also creates more SEO juice for your site which means Google begins to see your site as something it should pay attention to because you’re establishing authority in your niche.

When you guest blog, you are benefitting the other person’s site because you are adding a value-filled post on their domain. But when you link back to your own site from that post, you pass on the SEO juice from their site to yours. Basically you are saying, Hey Google, this site is also a good place to find out more about this topic.

The more reputable backlinks you create or elicit from other sites back to yours, the more Google will rank you highly in searches related to those topics. Ok, are you sold on the benefits of guest blogging? I thought you would be. But now, are you wondering how you should go about it? Don’t worry – I’ve got some tips for you:

  1. Choose your opportunities wisely. Don’t waste an amazing guest post on any old site. Pick a website that relates to your industry or audience in some way. If you pick the right site, you could even become a regular contributor or find your next online BFF! Offer an guest post in exchange for them on your site if it is a good fit, that way you both get something out of the arrangement.
  2. Write a value-filled post related to your niche/product/service. You want to be sure your post is offering major value – enough so that people actually click back to your site because they want to learn more about you. This is your chance to get exposure to a new audience so don’t blow your first impression.
  3. Properly link back to your site in your post using a do-follow link. You should use an in-copy contextual link to link back to your website. This means not just a link that says ‘click here’ or ‘view my website’. Choose a page or post related to the topic of your guest post and make sure the link text includes a keyword for that topic.
